Odisha govt asks colleges, varsities to hold exams in time

BHUBANESWAR: Higher education department has asked autonomous colleges and state universities to hold their annual examinations in time. It warned that delay in conducting examinations will create cascading effect in the publication of final results.

In a letter to principals of autonomous colleges and controller of examinations of state universities, Jayanta Narayan Sarangi, additional secretary of the higher education department, on Wednesday urged the institutions to submit information regarding their examination schedule before the department by February 10.

“It has come to notice of the government that some universities and autonomous colleges do not conduct semester examinations either of the undergraduate or post graduate courses in time. Delay in conducting examinations will not only deprive the students of going abroad or other universities for higher studies, but also demoralize the students,” said the additional secretary in his letter.

Sarangi urged the institutions to adhere to the timelines of examination and publish the results in time. Department asked these colleges and universities to send schedule of semester examinations of Plus III courses and expected date of publication of results for the sake of the students’ interest.

On August 28 last year, the department had organised a meeting of registrars, controllers of examinations and comptrollers of finance of the universities of the state to discuss on timely examinations, evaluation and publication of results. In the meeting, higher education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo had focused on timely examination and publication of results.

Last year, students of different degree and management colleges under Utkal University had staged dharna in the university campus demanding early publication of their results. Post graduate students of the university had also gheraoed the vice chancellor of the university to conduct examinations in time.

The department also gets several complaints from students of different autonomous colleges and state universities regarding delay in holding semester examinations and publication of results.
