A site has been secured for Naiscoil na Seolta, or “Nursery of the Sail” in a reference to the nearby shipyard.
Linda Ervine from Irish language organisation Turas said a number of parents have already expressed an interest in sending their children to the facility.
The school is being backed by both the NI Council for Integrated Education and Comhairle na Gaelscolaiochta.
INTEREST be open in Mrs Ervine said s hope to be open in September.
She added: “Even though we’ve not even opened yet, revealed the location or there’s been any publicity about it, there’s already people keen to sign up to get their children in.
“There’s a lot of interest and research into the benefits of children growing up bilingual and people also see Irish medium schools numbers of pupils and the benefits that brings as well.”
The Irish language campaigner said the hope would be to open a Bunscoil next, or primary level Irish medium school.
School may September It is hoped the new nursery will attract children not only from East Belfast but from Holywood and Dundonald. Mrs Ervine added some of the parents who have so far expressed an interest are also from mixed marriages.
