Tributes have flooded in for actor Eileen Ryan, the mom of performers Sean and Christopher Penn, and musician Michael Penn, who passed away at 94.
Ryan died unexpectedly last Sunday, October 9, at their Malibu apartment. Ryan passed just before her 95th birthday, which would have occurred on October 16.
Who is Eileen Ryan?
Ryan was born in New York on October 16, 1927, the child of doctor Rose Isabella and dentist Amerigo Giuseppe Annucci.
She wedded Leo Penn, a blacklisted actor and active government employee from the 1940s to the late 1950s. The couple was wedded for over forty years until Leo passed in 1998.

A household spokesperson confirmed the news to the media while specifying the cause of the death. Her musician son Michael Penn confirmed the information on Instagram on Monday. He posted a photo album of his mom in her youth, “We lost mom recently.” Condolences came in from industry colleagues like actors John Leven stein and Joely Fisher and Academy award artist Jason Isbell.

Eileen Ryan excelled as an actress in the big and small media and was featured in several Broadway musicals. Inside the James Bailey neo-noir movie At Short Ranges, she portrayed the mother of two sons, Sean & Christopher, based on the true story of Bruce Johnston Sr., the father of a rural Pennsylvania criminal gang. Ryan would continue to appear in several further films with their son, Sean, that includes The Assassination of Richard Nixon and The Pledge.
