GMC got MCI nod for four DM Neurology seats, highest in AP

GUNTUR: In a big achievement, Medical Council of India (MCI) has granted permission for increase of seats in super-specialty post-graduation course (DM) in Neurology to four seats in Guntur Medical College (GMC). GMC is the only college in the state to get four seats in DM and it is next only to Nims in Hyderabad to have highest seats. Nims has eight seats in DM stream.

The Board of Governors of MCI has stamped its nod for hike of the intake of DM Neurology seats from 02 to 04. Taking the reports submitted by the members of assessors and expert members into consideration, MCI at its meeting held in New Delhi had granted the permission for the increase in the intake. The infrastructure available in the department of Neurology is on par with central deemed medical universities across India. The department has been offering services like sleep lab, stroke unit, NICU, Adams seminar hall and patient care with full team of medical and nursing professionals. The department was in fact completely transformed under the leadership of chief of the wing Dr NV Sundarachary in the last few years. In fact, many philanthropists have come forward to develop the department after seeing the services offered by neurologists headed by Dr Sundarachary. Natco pharma has sponsored the development of sleep lab in GGH, the first one in government institutions in southern states.

The neurology department is one of the few wings in Government General Hospital (GGH) which received highest number of patients from across two Telugu states thanks to the excellent services offered for the poor in the hospital. “More seats means that the state is going to get more super specialist medical professionals to serve the people. We are happy to make the department as Centre of Excellence,” said Head of the Department (HoD) Dr Sundarachary. He said that more seats would also help them carry out researches on various critical aspects of neurology to find out solutions to the ailments. The department is working with Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) in stroke research.
