Art workshop 'Srijana Sanchaya' to honour Harekala Hajabba held

MANGALURU: Karavali Yuva Sinchana, a group of like-minded people organised an art workshop ‘Srijana Sanchaya’ for students of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School, New Padpu also known as Hajabba’s school.

Harekala Hajabba, 64, known as Akshara Santha, an illiterate fruit vendor has been chosen for the Padma Shri, Social Work (Affordable Education) for his contribution to the field of education. Ever Since the government made this announcement, he is being honoured and felicitated by several organisations, associations and individuals.

Dinesh Holla, artist and member of Karavali Yuva Sinchana told TOI, “We organised a workshop at this school on Thursday in honour of Hajabba. People have been honouring him with shawls and mementos. His happiness lies in the happiness of children and during a workshop conducted at his school in the past, he found the children engrossed and happy. This workshop is a tribute to him, but unfortunately, he could not be present there. We would be conducting a similar workshop at the school soon. Acts like this will have a long lasting impact, rather than restricting the event to mere felicitation,” he said.

The workshop was about how to improve handwriting- Hindi, English and Kannada and drawing. Children were taught to prepare a mask and pen stand. Harshitha and Majima, post graduate students from Mangalore University have assisted in the workshop. Teachers of the school have been very supportive. Nearly 42 students from class six to nine participated. Very soon a workshop on environment will be held at the school, said Holla.
