The Inaugural Session which was presided over by University’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. B. S Ghuman who presented his presidential remarks and laid stress on the Namdhari Movement in present times and said that there is a dire need to interpret and reinterpret the contribution of Namdharis in the history of India. He also urged that in today’s era of Globalization one cannot grow until and unless one follows the ideals of Namdharis.
While speaking on the dais Balbir Singh Sidhu elaborated the contribution of Namdhari sect in the freedom struggle of India and how even in contemporary society the Namdhari sect plays a pivotal role in the growth and development of society.
Satgur Uday Singh Ji, Guru of Namdhari Sect gave his consent to grace the seminar. While discussing about the aims and objectives of the Namdhari sect he highlighted that this sect should not be considered a separate sect from Sikhism. Instead it is the sect which is following the ideals of the Sikh Gurus. Tracing the contribution of Sikh Gurus from Guru Nanak to the tenth Guru Gobind Singh for the upliftment of downtrodden and fought against the tyranny. Similarly, the Namdhari sect is also following the footsteps of these Gurus and propagated that one should lead a life according to the teachings of Sikh Gurus”, he added.
Dr. Wariam Singh Sandhu, from Jalandhar highlighted that importance of Namdhari Movement through the lens of Punjabi Literature.
Dr. Mohammad Idris, Head of the Department of History, Punjabi University, Patiala introduced the theme of the Seminar while Gurbhej Singh Guraya, Secretary Punjabi Academy, Delhi conducted the stage proceedings and Prof. Manjit Singh Nijjar, Registrar Punjabi University proposed the Vote of Thanks.
